“Well Whitney isn’t abusive, don’t get me wrong. But my Mother had always been very strict, lectures and scolding; often times a lashing depending on our wrong doings. She’s very…nun like.” Angel explained. “I had only gotten it a few times when I was little, Zeke almost did but I wouldn’t let her a lot of the time or I would take the blame. And Zeke says that Annabel used to get it a lot.”

"Lashings? That isn't counted as 'abuse'?" Darrin asked, shocked. He was raised in a home where a SPANKING was rarely ever dished out. His parents never laid a seriously negative hand on he or his sisters. He could only recall his father ever spanking him once as a child and even then Jacob felt bad and went to apologize in a sniffling, sobbing mess.

“Well it’s just what she referred to them as; that’s just how we know it in the house. It was originally a wooden paddle, like for paddle ball? But a few years later she switched to a measuring stick.” Angel explained casually. It wasn’t anything for her, when she was young she thought that’s how every parent was. But it being long gone in the past, Angel didn’t really feel anything towards it anymore. It was just something that Whitney did.

"Holy crap...that's...that's TERRIBLE." Darrin blurted out, feeling his stomach twist at the mere thought of someone wailing on their child with a MEASURING STICK or with anything for that matter. It wasn't as if it was the first time he'd heard of abuse cases, hell, growing up most of the kids that he went to school with came with cuts and bruises and the excuse that they'd "fallen" or whatever else they were instructed to say upon questioning, but to think Angel had been in a situation where a harsh hand was used made him feel sick and angry.

“It wasn’t bad, it didn’t happen often. I learned after the first couple times and it didn’t really happen again after those.” Angel shrugged again. She liked to do it bare skinned but I don’t have any scars or anything. I had welts for awhile though,” she nodded. “Of course you don’t have to worry; I would never do that to our child.” Angel said quickly, throwing her hands up which was the most emotion she had shown towards the subject.

"I know you wouldn't but...doesn't it bother you at all that your mom did that?" Darrin asked, his brows furrowing. To him it was a concerning matter, but it didn't look like it bothered Angel all that much really.

“It used to. But it’s something I got used to, after awhile I just felt…numb about it. Of course I realize how wrong it is, but at the time it was just something that or Mother did. I mean…I suppose it’s not that big of a deal because looking back; it’s not the worst thing I’ve faced.” Angel admitted quietly, thinking of her Father and then the unmerciful street life that followed.

Darrin opened his mouth but opted to pulling a face and sighing quietly instead. He bit at his lip and curled his hand up, resting his now-formed fist against Angel's leg still. He wasn't quite sure what to say exactly about it all, Angel's overall childhood and life before him just seemed so...hard.

Angel didn’t expect Darrin to say anything in response to that, and she was okay that he didn’t. “And you know what’s really sad?” Angel asked, pausing to bite her lip. “There are kids in this town that are worse off then I was; if anything, I’m a lucky one.” She whispered.

That was the awful truth about Fort Morgan. You don’t get to live here because you’re a model citizen, you live here most likely because you’re in some kind of trouble and are bringing up kids to do the same. It’s a crooked town with demons and children that in the end, are just scared and hurt.

Darrin let out a slight scoff, feeling his chest tighten some at the subject. He was well aware of what Fort Morgan was like. He grew up there, he helped run the streets with Luca and everyone else even. He knew what kind of Hell rested in Fort Morgan.

He gave a shake of his head.

"That's not lucky." He said.

“It is, I’m lucky nothing worse happened, and I’m lucky that things got better.” Angel said firmly, defending her answer.

Darrin pressed his lips into a firm line once more and furrowed his brows. He begged to differ, but didn't want to really continue on with the debate. Instead, he unfurled his hand and gave Angel's leg a light set of pats before letting out a sharp exhale. He went ahead and removed her legs from his lap and stood up. He started off for the kitchen and only paused to brush a hand over Angel's shoulder.

"I'm gonna grab something to drink. Need anything?" He said, his voice slightly tensed due to the discussion.

He could be reminded of the going-ons and the troubles most kids faced in Fort Morgan a million times over and it'd still get to him. While he was fortunate enough to avoid the harsh turbulence of most of their childhoods, he had to see it and that was enough to bother him.

“No, I don’t want anything.” Angel said quietly, turning her head a little bit; soaking up the tenseness.

Darrin bit at his lip when he looked down at Angel before letting otu a light huff from his nose. He moved his hand to her hair and ran his fingers through her blond tresses before leaning down to peck a kiss at her forehead.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get upset, its just hard hearing about it." He said as he pulled away.

“I know it is,” Angel said quietly, looking up and pressing her lips to his for a moment before pulling away slightly.
