Today was the day; the day that Dale, Rena, and Franky would put Lorain in the ground forever. They would never have another chance to runaway to her warm home, cry in her lap, or listen to her harmonious mid summer nights lullaby. Lorain was a beautiful woman, even as though her mind was slowly slipping away, she was clever and wise in different ways. That though weren't direct, always helpful to the kids.

Rena and the family showed up, on time at Fonz Pond where they'd be burying Momma Lorain. The rumor was since Rena was a girl, the Fonz Pond was haunted. This was where they buried Jesse Kid, and then later Sydney Kid. Today Lorain Kid would be buried right between her boys. Rena was wearing a lovely white halter dress that Lorain had actually given her. She remembered having the conversation when they buried Sydney, Lorain felt that white was a better color to wear then black to see off a loved one. So, Rena felt that most appropriate after having remembered that conversation. It was one of the last ones they had.

Dale was wearing however wearing a light blue button up and a dark blue tie. His eyes much like Rena and Franky's were red and blood shot from crying. This day wasn't going to be easy for the trio. Everyone were already gathering and getting seated together around the casket and a podium stood at the end of the aisle with the priest; prepared to say his piece before he would call up the three.

Mikey sat beside Rena, dressed in a plain white button-up with a nice, pressed black tie and slacks to match. He had his arm draped around Rena's shoulders as he looked onward to the podium where Lorain's casket laid. He hadn't known Lorain all that well, never had the chance, but from what he could tell she was a good woman who raised up all of her kids, bio-logical and otherwise, up right. All the times Mikey had ever met her, she'd been kind and soft-spoken, a gentle woman, and although he barely knew her, he knew she'd be missed by anyone and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

He gently rubbed his hand at Rena's shoulder and even gave it a light squeeze of reassurance in that morose time. The days proceeding the funeral were rough and now being there, Mikey couldn't imagine that it was getting any easier. He'd asked Leo, once again, to do him the favor of watching the kids, mostly for the sake of letting Rena cry it all out without having to worry about them.

Sylvie had come to attend as well and, much like Mikey, she took her place beside her own significant other, Dale. She had her hand resting on his lap with their fingers intertwined.

She'd never once met Lorain, but because she was Dale's mother, she felt like it was appropriate to come and pay her first, and last, respects and give Dale the emotional support she could only begin to imagine he'd be needing. She knew what it was like to lose a parent, moreover, a loving mother, and she wanted to be there for Dale like the very few people who were there for herself in her own trialed times.

Rena just stared blankly at the casket, tears welling up in her red eyes already at just the thought of letting them put Lorain in the ground. It didn't feel right, she was such a lovely woman full or promise and love. And now they were just going to just bury and let her rot. It didn't feel like it did Lorain's soul justice. Dale squeezed Sylvie's hand, not painfully so. But as a child would their parent would crossing a busy street. His gaze was dropped in his lap as he chewed at his lip, fighting the urge to burst into tears. He was glad Sylvie came, after Luther's slander it seemed only right that Sylvie see where he came from and the kind of person who brought him up. He also needed the support, Mikey and Rena had each other but Dale needed someone too today.

The priest cleared his throat to signify the beginning of the ceremony. "We are gathered here today, to say our farewells to a woman we all knew on a deep level. For many of you, she was your mother, others that friendly smile to get you through the day. Lorain came to my church often for awhile and I got to know her, while I feel like there was so much more to know I think I have come to understand what an amazing woman she was. To start off the ceremony we'll have some family come up to speak, Franky Wine-Gardener, do you have anything prepared?"

Franky was in a handsome black suit with a red tie, his face had been previously buried in his hands in attempt to collect himself. But upon looking up, nodding and approaching the podium it was obvious he was still a mess. He brushed off his suit jacket before clearing his throat and gripping the podium.

"It's...It's really odd to hear people address her so formally. I honestly don't know most of the people here today outside us kids. But Mommy, Momma Lorain took me in at a very young age. I didn't have a home, not really...Or much of a family. But you know Sydney, he was a good boy, I was at his house all the time and his Mom was so kind to me...It wasn't much of surprise that I split home and moved in with my best friend and his guardian; the two who become my whole world. Momma Lorain and my Brother Sid. Boys will boys you know and the two of us...We got into all kinds of trouble. But we'd always come home, cryin' and scuffed up. We'd try to tell Momma what happened, we just loved her enough to be honest; she trusted us. And-" Franky paused to cover his eyes and let out a short sob before inhaling sharply and trying again.

"And she just, she just KNEW. She would shush us and hum our favorite lullaby and just take care of us. She knew we were trouble, 'ruffians,' but she still loved us. When people would harass her at the supermarket that she was bringing up a couple of bad boys!" he paused to sob again. "She would just shake her head because she knew better. Lorain Kid loved all of the children who came through her house. It didn't matter what you had done, were you came from-there was always a hot meal and a warm bed waiting for you! I just wish that Sydney could've been here today, he would've said something real good about our Momma...He loved her so much, there was a whole universes... of unspoken trust and bond between those two...She was an angel, a saint. Jesse would've been so proud...For a single mother and a house full of kids that weren't hers...She did so great...so great..." Franky trailed off in a heavy sob before the priest helped him off back to his seat.

Mikey bit at his lip and looked downward. He'd never really seen Franky as he'd seen him at the funeral; distraught, lost, and sad. For the most part, Franky was a logical sort of smartassy man, but as he came down from the podium, Mikey could see so much more. He could see the pain, the hurt, and to be honest (although, it was expected), to see someone like Franky so shaken, so sad, it rattled him a bit. He took a shaky breath and continued to stroke at Rena's shoulder.

Sylvie gently traced a circle on Dale's hand with her thumb, as if to let him know that she was there beside him.

"Rena? I believe you're next." The priest waved her on.

Rena gave a nervous glance at Mikey, as if she wanted to ask him to go with her and hold her hand, but she glanced back at the podium and decided to be brave, for Lorain. She silently stood up and approached the podium.

"I remember...The first time I met Lorain, the first time I met all the kids. Sydney brought me into their home because...I was homeless...In the dead of winter. I was scared and within an inch of my life when he took me in. Now, when I visit this memory...I would usually be grateful to Sid. But the memory is still fresh, I was frightened of him...Of everyone. But Sydney gave me my space, that's when Lorain approached me. That's when I knew, she was my Mommy. The mommy all little girls need but I was denied. She just hushed my whimpers and cries, guided me into a hot bath and combed my hair...She held me, TIGHT, while I cried into her chest...Then she tucked me, in her bed and left me there before making me breakfast the following morning. I should've been scared of her...But somehow I knew, I could just see it in her eyes; I could smell it in her perfume...The way she treated me, like I was that daughter she had been waiting for all her life...We needed each other it seemed..." Rena whimpered with a half smile as she quickly wiped the tears for her eyes.

"I need. My mom...Not right now, not for a specific reason I just. Need. My mom..." Rena cried into her forearm as she wiped her face. "I just wish I was there more...I wish she could give us kids words of wisdom at the kitchen table; one more time. I just...Wish we could've said goodbye..." Rena wept and wailed into her hands before again, the priest escorted her back to her seat. There Rena buried her face into Mikey's chest and gripped his shoulders tightly as she cried.

Mikey instantly took Rena into his arms and folded them tight around her, holding her close to him. His lips instantly fell near her ear and he hushed and cooed to her while he pet at the back of her hair. His voice quivered and quaked and his eyes pricked with tears. He hated to see Rena in the state she was in. He hated to see her in pain, so sad, and he hated that it was under these circumstances.

He hated that Lorain had to be gone, that she was up in that casket when it should have been, in his opinion, anyone else. After all the good she'd done, the love she showed, it should have been someone, anyone else.

The priest had a sad and disappointed expression, so far none of these had gone well. He wasn't really prepared to escort the next fellow from the podium, he was certain that he could. A child.

"Dale Kid, would you please rise to the podium." He asked.

Dale looked up, with wide and wet blue eyes. He resembled that of a puppy that had been abandoned. Perhaps how Hachi would look when his master never returned to him. He looked back at Sylvie, nervous and scared, it was like Franky had mentioned; he barely knew a handful of people there. Dale didn't want to boldly go up there like Rena and Franky and cry to everyone. None of these people could truly understand, never seeing most of these people, Dale figured how did they know he mother at all?

"Dale, do you have anything you'd like to say?" The Priest asked again.

Dale squeezed Sylvie's hand and nodded. He looked back to her and licked his lips before lightly placing a kiss on her hand and going up to the podium.

"My name is Dale Eric Kid, and I was Lorain's youngest son. Something very saddening to me, is that Lorain wasn't my real Mom. My biological mother, like my biological father; didn't want me. I was just a baby and I was going to be thrown away...But Lorain...I mean, I can't remember of course but later on she told me the story of how it happened. The woman, my Mother wasn't really holding me carefully; smoking a cigarette in her other hand and was parading towards Lorain's porch. After me the house was restricted mostly to children refugees but at that point if anybody needed a bed or a shower it was available. But Lorain saw me, kicking and whimpering...And I guess...She told me, that something lit up in her. She got that same feeling inside her when she was pregnant with Sydney, when she looked at Franky...She looked at me and reached out for me as the woman stepped onto the porch. The woman looked at her and handed me off, said she could keep me."

Dale paused with a light chuckle. "As the story goes, Lorain said that she wasn't going to ask. But that's the kind of woman my Mom is. She's warm and full of love, but she's all the same like any mother, fierce and protective where she needs to be. So was a lovely woman, and she was an amazing Mom. She treated all of us as her own, Lorain was a lot of things but mostly she was everyone's Mom. And for that I thank her and I hope she keeps an eye on me from where ever she may go. I love you Mom." Dale said with a nod before returning to his seat.

Sylvie felt tears prick up in her eyes when Dale spoke his piece. She took a sharp, shaking breath as she reached out to take Dale's hand again. Despite his brave facade, it was obvious he was hurting, he was going to miss his momma, and Sylvie wanted to offer what solace she could to him. She gave his hand a tight squeeze and looked over to him, mouthing a "she'd be proud" to him.

Mikey, who was still in the midst of consoling Rena, reached over with his free hand and gave Dale's shoulder a squeeze of assurance before withdrawing it and returning to Rena.

"Thank you young man, would anyone else like to come say their piece?" asked the priest.

"I would." A voice said from the back. All head turned as an old man stood up, his skin was fair and his face was adorned with a short trim white beard and a head of white hair. His eyes were a light, bright blue and he wore a blue business suit.

"Yes, who might you be sir?" asked the priest.

"I'm Lorain's father." He said storming up to the podium with a certain ferocity.

Mikey swiveled his head back and raised his eyebrows at the old man storming down the aisle.

The old man shoved the priest away from the podium before gripping the sides of it.

"My name is Sergio Scyther. I am Loraina's father. Unlike the three hooligans who spoke before me, I'll tell the real story of my daughter. As a girl she was unruly, always running around in the fields and in the creek. She was always dirty and loud, mouthy and ungrateful. Then, as she got older she ran away from home, dropped out of school to elope with some gang leader. I believe he's the man you've all referred to as Jesse?" He began to tirade.

All heads were turning and bodies shifting in their seats, no one knew what to say or do, how to react to this man.

"She only ever called me when she wanted money, because one of those hellions were sick. Lorain didn't honor her family, she forgot where she came from! She came to this shit hole to be some trashy house mother for a bunch of runaways and gangsters and prostitutes. That's not a real mother, raising a lot of wild boys and letting them do their no goods. She ought to be ashamed of herself, I know I am." He went on.

Mikey looked around to see everyone shifting in their seats, obviously confused as to what the proper plan of action should be. He expected someone to get up and give this man, Lorain's father, a what-for, but what he didn't expect was that someone was going to be little Sylvie.

Sylvie boldly stood up, still attached to Dale's hand as she did so. Her face was serious, but solemn and sad all at the same time. She'd never been one to cause a ruckus, but she'd always been one to stand up for what was right when needed, raising "hell" when it was called for. This was one of those times.

"Excuse me, sir, but I think you just need to remove yourself from the podium and return to your seat right NOW, please." Sylvie said, her voice trembling, hoping it didn't have to escalate from there.

"Excuse me miss, and just who are you?" He inquired, leaning forward off the podium.

"I'm Sylvie Edison, sir, and I'm currently in a relationship with one of Lorain's 'wild boys' as you so disgustingly put it." Sylvie said, standing firm in her ground. "In fact, everything you've said so far has been horridly disgusting, especially considering that all this slander is coming from Miss Lorain's own FATHER, if that's what you really are. I don't know what anyone else has to say on the subject, but where I'm from, a real father doesn't speak of his own child like that, especially one that has passed on."
