If they decide to go ahead, the next you will hear is a summons from the court. You (or your solicitor) can then put forward your views in court and see what the court says. To be honest, as you admit you were holding your notes and looking at them, the court will consider that that is without due care no matter what you say.It's not the end of the world, at least you didn't (presumably) hit someone or cause them to swerve. Driving without due care and attention attracts a fine and 3 - 9 points, I'd guess you will be towards the lower end of the scale.
