You might be able to fight this. You need to talk to a lawyer. Take pic of your car and show the damage. Once you got the license plate you should have stopped. You will have to look more in to the driving course. I dont think it is mandatory that you take it but I could be wrong. I think if you dont take it you will get points on your license. Now if you win I dont think so.You can decline the driving course option and hope they don't charge you, you can take your chances and plead not guilty in court but be aware the fine and/or points could cost you a lot more or save up and go on the course.
Next time avoid the temptation to give into road rage he may well have been in the wrong but you made it worse.
